Christine Harrell asked:

If you’ve ever returned from vacation feeling more exhausted than before you left, you’ve got to ask yourself if your vacation truly served its purpose! If the purpose of your vacation is to escape from the rat race and heavy tourism hotspots, consider a vacation experience that is off the beaten path nestled in the peaceful mountains of Idaho.

Idaho Golf Resorts

Amid the majestic natural scenery of Idaho, golf resorts are a sight to see. There are few other refreshing and empowering experiences than that of playing a round of golf on one of the many Idaho golf resorts throughout the state. While a golf course can be anywhere, the breathtaking backdrop of Idaho’s natural beauty makes a vacation at one of the many Idaho golf resorts a spectacular and revitalizing experience.

Mountain Trail Horseback Riding

Horses have long been used in therapy to help people understand themselves and bring about a sense of relaxation. Horseback riding in the majestic Teton Mountains is an awe-inspiring experience that revitalizes all of the senses. Many Teton Valley cabin rentals are located in close proximity to horseback riding adventure tours. After a day of exploring the Tetons by horseback, your return to one of these tranquil Teton Valley cabin rentals is a relaxing way to spend the evening.

Kayaking and Canoeing

In today’s hustle and bustle world, many of us rarely take the time to really immerse ourselves in the magnificent outdoors. Kayaking and canoeing in the Tetons is a healthy, liberating experience that brings you up close with nature. With many Teton Valley cabin rentals located in close proximity to rivers and streams, you’ll have access to plenty of guided kayaking and canoeing tours throughout the area.

Hot Air Ballooning

There is no better way to see the Teton Mountains than from the basket of a gently floating hot air balloon. The Teton Mountains are one of the earth’s greatest masterpieces. At its highest peak, the Tetons reach 13,766 feet with many peaks rising above the earth at 12,000 feet. From the basket of a hot air balloon, we are reminded of the power of nature and the power within ourselves.

Paragliding

If you’re the adventurous sort, paragliding near the Teton Mountains can be one of the most invigorating experiences of your life. As the wind glides you through the open air, you can feel the strength of possibility when you let go and enjoy life’s incredible ride.

To get the full experience from your Idaho vacation, choose lodging that is a continuation of your revitalizing activities of the day. Many Teton Valley cabin rentals mimic the grandeur and splendor of Idaho’s outdoors that evoke a feeling of relaxation and comfort. In fact, many Teton Valley cabin rentals offer a vacation in and of themselves with hot tubs, richly decorated western interiors, fireplaces, outdoor grills, and other peaceful luxuries.

Some Teton Valley cabin rentals include skiing packages for a revitalizing vacation that your family will not soon forget. Jackson Hole skiing and Heli-skiing offer some of the most exciting slopes and magnificent views anywhere in the United States.

Regardless of where you go or what activities you choose to do during your vacation, you owe it to yourself to enjoy a vacation that revitalizes the spirit. In today’s hectic hustle and bustle world, taking time for yourself is an essential part of being able to remain centered, confident, and energized.

Planning a vacation? Well Romania is ìtheî place to beÖit is the most diverse country in terms of climate, terrain, flora and fauna; snow capped mountains and a sultry coastline- you can ski on snow or on water!

It is located in southeastern Europe. Romania is surrounded by Ukraine to the north, Hungary to its north west, Moldova to the north east and Bulgaria in the south. The famous river Danube flows through Romania from the northwest to the east into the equally famous black sea after forming a picturesque delta- the famous Danube delta!

Romanians are known to be very friendly and hospitable people. The national language is Romanian and others include Hungarian and German. Most Romanians can also communicate fluently in English.

How to get to Romania?

If you are in Europe you can get to Romania by train, road or a sea cruise!

If you are in another part of the world then the most convenient airline is the AUSTRIAN. Why not try the 4 Star Hotel Europa in Eforie Nord. Situated in a dramatic setting overlooking the bay in the scenic Efories Nord.

Or perhaps spend your holiday at the 3 Star Vox Maris Club Resort Hotel an ideal short haul summer destination. In Costinesti the Vox Maris is a self-contained club resort and is a perfect location to enjoy the Black Sea.

Erkan Kilim asked:

European E4 long distance path

The Cyprus section, which has been set up as a joint venture between the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Cyprus Tourism Organisations, connects Larnaka and Pafos airports. Along the way, it passes through areas of outstanding natural beauty, places of ecological importance and historic and archaelogical sites. All the roads and tracks on the route are well signposted and the CTO has published a booklet of the Cyprus section, splitting it into comfortable daily sections, with the distance and time needed to cover each one. Ot also gives useful information on the geology, flora, fauna and points of interest along each section of the route.

Hiking and rambling

The Cyprus Tourism Organisation and the Forestry Department have created over sixty nature trails to assist hikers and ramblers enjoy the island’s hills and vales. The trails, some linear and others circular, help walkers discover the most fascinating corners of Cyprus. The terrain varies from that of Cape Gkreko in the southeast, through the Troodos Mountains, the foothills and forests to the Akamas peninsula in the west. The tyrails, which are designed to take in areas of outstanding, natural beauty and cultural importance, are on gentle gradients and are divided into three degrees of difficulty with two trails suitable for the disabled. Wooden signboards mark the start of each trial and there are pointers to interesting flora or geological features along each route. The CTO’S booklet ‘European Long Distance Path E4 and other Cyprus Nature Trails’ gives details of the European E4 path and all the nature trials with the length, duration and degree of difficulty of each one. You can pick up a copy at the nearest CTO information office.

Cycling:

If your idea of traveling is to have the wind on your face, the sun on your back, the gentle crunch of tyres on gravel, the scent of pines around you and a glimpse of the sea sparkling in the distance, then cycling in Cyprus is for you. Almost all the tourist resorts have bicycles for hire and the CTO’s guidebook Cyprus Cycling Routes can be picked up at the nearest CTO information centre. The guidebook covers main routes connecting towns or regions and excursions within a region. Each itinerary describes the route from point to point by altitude and the distance from the start point the total distance is given, as well as the difficulty rating, which is based on the average moderately fit cyclist. Recommendations are also made as to the type of bicycle suitable for each route and the road surface is described. The book includes a map of each route. There is also a longer cycling route in the Troodos mountains. This is split into three sections and takes riders from Pano Platres to the Karvounas mountain saddle; then to Prodromos and finally back to Platres. The route is on forest, rural and secondary roads and it passes villages, historical sites, monasteries and areas of outstanding natural beauty. It is signposted and there are markers pointing to viewpoints etc. for competitive cyclists, the Cyprus Cycling Federation, which is a member of the International Cycling Union (ICU) organizes an annual three-day international mountain bike competition called ‘Afxentia’ that attracts cyclists from all over Europe. The CCF also runs annual road races.

Horse Riding:

Riding is a different way of exploring the hidden secrets of the Cyprus landscape. There are riding stables and ranches all ovewr the island, so you can enjoy the Akamas peninsula, the Cape Gkreko Natiional Forest Park or the pine-scented Troodos Mountains on horseback. Riding allows you to enjoy nature at a slower pace, to hear the birdsong and watch the incredible colours of the last rays of the setting sun over sea or mountain. Riding can be enjoyed year-round thanks to the island’s climate and there is trekking and hatching for all levels of competence. Riding lessons are also available at centres with well-trained horses and qualified instructors. The CTO has published a pamphlet Horse Riding in Cyprus and more information is available from the Cyprus Equestrian Federation. For those who are nervous of horses, donkey rides are also available.

Skiing and Snowboarding:

Chionistra, the traditional name for Mount Olympus at the summit of the Troodos Mountains, means ‘the snowy one’ and in winter, it is covered with a good layer of snow.Cyprus Hotels There is a brief but vigorous skiing and snowboarding season from December to March. There are four main runs, on the southern slopes Sun Valley I is ideal for novices and Sun Valley 2 is for more practiced skiers. North Face I and North Face 2 are for the experienced. The Cyprus Ski Club runs t-bar lifts at Sun Valley and the North Face, where there are six alpine standard runs varying from 100 to 500 metres. There are two langlauf trails at Sun Valley; one of eight kilometres and one of four, which go through some wonderful and dramatic scenery. Snowboarding is growing in popularity and plans are afoot to create a park dedicated solely to this up-and-coming sport. Visitors can hire equipment from the ski store at Sun Valley and individual and group tuition is available for skiers and snowboarders.

Angling:

Angling in the dam reservoirs of Cyprus is a very popular pastime and twenty-one reservoirs provide excellent fresh-water fishing throughout the year. Seventeen species of fish are stocked, including trout, bass, carp, perch and roach. ‘Catch and keep’ is allowed at akk but two sites, Polemedeia (Lemesos District) and Achna (Ammochostos District) , which are ‘catch and release’ only. Anglers need a fishing licence, which can be easily obtained from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research in Nicosia or from the regional offices of the Fisheries Department.

Ornithology:

Cyprus lies on one of the main migratory paths for bird species from Europe, Asia and Africa and there are many endemic species on the island. Winter is the time to enjoy spectacular flocks of flamingos and wildfowl at the Salt Lakes. High summer is a quiet time, as the number of breeding species is relatively small. Autumn is excellent for the passage of raptors, especially in September and October. The season also sees a massive movement of wildfowl, gulls and herons. Birdlife Cyprus is an NGO that promotes the protection of birds and their habitats. BLC is an affiliate of Birdlife Europe and it runs birdwatching trips and a birdline, through which visitors can find out what is happening on the local scene.

Botany:

In the heat of summer, visitors can be forgiven for thinking that Cyprus is bereft of flowers, as the dry rock-strewn hills show scant evidence that the island is home to an extraordinary variety of wildflowers and orchids, including around 130 endemic plants. The best time to see Cyprus’ wild flowers is in early spring (February-march). When most species enjoy a short period of blossoming and take advantage of the unusually moist climate. The country’s floral profile is the result of the catastrophic ice ages when much of the flora of northern and central Europe was glacier covered, while the Mediterranean basin escaped unscathed, providing a haven for the evolution of plant life.

National Forest Parks:

There are seven national forest parks, including two within the environs of Nicosia-Athalassa Park and Paedagogical Academy Parks, which have nature trails, picnic sites, birdwatching basketball arenas. The Troodos National Forest Park is the largest and includes four Nature Reserves. It has the largest number of wild plats, including endemics, compared to anywhere else on the island and has been designated as one of the thirteen Mediterranean Plant Diversity Hot Spots. The Park has many recreational facilities, including picnic sites, a campsite, nat?re trails, riding and winter sport. The Cavo Gkreko National Forest Park in the southeast of the islands is ideal for hiking., picnicking, cycling, riding, climbing, swimming and diving.

Planning your Caribbean honeymoon shouldn’t be as complex as planning your wedding… Right! But with so many enticing options, where do you start? Well, start here of course and let me help you discover the best of the best honeymoon destinations.

Certainly you’re looking for a romantic adventure where you’ll experience many “first time” events together and every couple wants something a little different. I had a fabulous Caribbean honeymoon and have taken some great trips in my lifetime. Check out these top picks and what makes them special. One of them is perfect for that memorable trip you’ve been dreaming of!

Barbados

This island is absolutely gorgeous and you will definitely leave feeling spoiled. Stay at the secluded 110-year-old Crane Hotel for nostalgic romance or at the Peach & Quiet for a budget honeymoon. It’s the adventurous couples dream with clear blue waters for scuba divers, windsurfers, and sightseeing from the air in a helicopter or underwater in a mini-sub. You’ll find decent beaches here, but not the best of the bunch.

Turks & Caicos

If you like small secluded luxury hotels with world-class spas and great restaurants, then you’ll love it here on any of the eight inhabited islands. The uncrowded beaches are absolutely fabulous. You may even end up sunbathing next to a movie star as many vacation in the Turks & Caicos. Go horseback riding, sail to one of the many deserted islands and play “Lost” for the day, see flocks of flamingos or thousands of iguanas on Little Water Cay. The scuba diving and snorkeling are phenomenal as is the deep-sea fishing and bone fishing. Kite-boarding, windsurfing and other water sports are also popular. A definite favorite for a perfect beach honeymoon vacation!

St. Lucia

This island is straight out of a fairytale with lush tropical scenery and twin mountain peaks covered in rain forest serenity. The locals are very friendly and seeing the St. Lucia Soufriere volcano from the inside will leave you in awe. Taking a day to tour the island on horseback is one of the major reasons this is in the top ten places to take a Caribbean honeymoon. Also, many hotels really cater to honeymooners with all-inclusive packages. Go in May and you’ll catch the Jazz Festival, which is way fun!

Dominican Republic

A great choice for a budget honeymoon that still had beautiful beaches and lots to offer. Taking a catamaran ride to the enchanting Saona Island is just one of the ways to enjoy this romantic getaway. Add a visit to the 600-acre Ecological Park enjoying a dozen blue lagoons is nothing short then a romantic getaway in heaven.

Martinique

A great romantic get-a-way, yet for some reason it’s still underrated compared to the rest here. Inhale the French culture along with the tantalizing scents of the beautiful flowers that consume the entire island. Take a canopy tour and go hiking in the rain forest canyons before getting a taste of superb Creole cuisine, going shopping and sampling the fairly lively nightlife.

Anguilla

When people choose a Caribbean honeymoon this island is over-looked more times than not. I have no idea why because it’s built for couples to enjoy. You won’t find much commercialization here, the nightlife is pretty low-key and water sports are not a big draw. But you’ll have dozens of fantastic beaches to explore and the fine dining is possibly the best in all the Caribbean.

British Virgin Islands (BVI)

You have several islands to choose from with many hotel options for a secluded romantic retreat. Ride a yacht to the famous Baths of Virgin Gorda or find a hidden beach for you and your loved to enjoy all alone. The beach bars on Jost Van **** are a fun hangout popular with sailors.

US Virgin Islands (USVI)

All beautiful areas here, the fact that they’re all considered part of the United States makes things more convenient. St. John has the best beaches and diving while St. Thomas is known for excellent dining and shopping. Of course, St. Croix is cheaper and also has casinos, so you pick or hop around. The variety of USVI makes it one of the best honeymoon destinations.

Jamaica

I absolutely love Ocho Rios. The Dunn’s River Falls has got to be the coolest adventure climb on any island. Climb the waterfall and jump back down into the water… amazing! Horseback riding on the beach, a little reggae music and rum at sunset and you’ve got yourself a nice romantic getaway plus it’s great for a budget honeymoon.

Cayman Islands

Saving this for last simply because if you want to take a romantic Caribbean honeymoon and still feel like your back home this is the closest thing you’ll come across. With many American themes you won’t feel too far away, but taking in some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the Caribbean will be breathtaking. Also, if you are into shopping and eating well, then the Caymans have got to be a top pick for you Caribbean honeymoon.

Now that you’ve got some good ideas, you just have to decide which is the best honeymoon destination for you. Hopefully this list has got you excited and also helped narrow down your choices too. Good luck and have fun. Whichever one you decide on, I hope you two have a wonderful wedding and a romantic honeymoon!

Richard Cummings asked:

When I am asked, “What is your favorite place in Uruguay, the answer invariably is Cabo Polonio.”  It’s a little slice of Heaven on Earth.

Like Heaven, it is also very difficult to get to-you have to pay attention to what you are doing or you’ll miss it.

My friend Vicky and I had decided to rent-a-car in Montevideo because we were visiting several beaches on this journey.  (See renting a car in Uruguay for more information.)  However, if you intend to just visit Cabo Polonio for a few days, it is much easier to take the bus from Montevideo if not but for one simple reason:  The bus driver knows where Cabo Polonio is!

The drive from Montevideo is about 3-4 hours…the bus may take a little bit longer.  After you pass the international hotspot of Punta Del Este, you are about half way home and the highway narrows to one lane with beautiful countryside all around you–beautiful countryside unimpeded with any signs about where Cabo Polonio might be.  La Paloma is the largest beach city near Cabo Polonio so just follow the signs to La Paloma.  Once outside of La Paloma, you have about a 1 hour drive.

If you drive for longer than one hour, you have passed Cabo Polonio or you drive way to slow!  Coming up from the La Paloma area, Cabo Polonio will be on your right and there is a sign, but it’s very small.  Don’t be afraid to ask people where it is–”¿Dónde está Cabo Polonio?” if you feel that you have gone to far.

Once you arrive in Cabo Polonio, you have really not arrived in Cabo Polonio.  This is one of the reasons that it is my favorite place in Uruguay.  Cabo Polonio is not accessible by car or bus.  When you see the sign for Cabo Polonio from the street, you are greeted with a few huts, houses, and shacks of those people who will take you from the road into the city of Cabo Polonio…about 10 kilometers through stunning forests and sand dunes.

These people normally take you into Cabo Polonio by truck (see picture below).  However, depending on the season, you can also ride horseback into Cabo Polonio.  Vicky wanted to ride horseback and I did too.

However, we were taking this trip in the beginning of November-a somewhat risky time weather-wise.  November is the beginning of the warm months but she has her menstrual cycles and can change without warning.  Luckily, we caught the good time of the month and the weather was perfect!

Fortunately, we found a family that offered horseback rides into Cabo Polonio at this time of year.  We were escorted by Valentino, a young 12 year old who schools in Montevideo during the week and works with his family here on the weekends.  I asked young Valentino if he knew that he was the namesake of a famous Latin Lover.  He looked at me quizzically…I am only 12.  Be patient young Valentino, your time will come!

The horseback ride was a phenomemonal experience and worth well more than the $30 that it cost.  I recommend it to everyone who visits Cabo Polonio.  You ride through pastures, forest, and finally long sand dunes to your arrival in Cabo Polonio.  Interestingly, after we arrived, young Valentino just unsaddled the horses and patted them on the ****.

“Don’t you have to take them back?” I asked young Valentino.

“No”, he responded, “they know their way back.”

For having reputedly such small brains, these horses were well-smart…like big homing pigeons.

Before the horses left, they roamed the streets for a little while as do many other animals, and people, in Cabo Polonio.  With no electricity, no paved roads, no 24-hours Nautilus, no Starbucks, no Internet cafes, no nada, Cabo Polonio is just a place to meander and relax.

As we are wont to do, Vicky and I exchanged that knowing glance that speaks a clear sentence:  “How ‘bout a cocktail?”  We did not know where we were going to stay.  Many folks labor endlessly visiting many places in order to make informed decisions.  Vicky and I visit the watering hole, meet people, and get valuable information with very little exercise.

In this instance, we asked our waiter for a cocktail, and then asked him:  “Do you know anywhere around here that we can stay?”

“You can stay here.  We have one room left and it overlooks the ocean.”

Perfect.

Do be careful with this approach.  This worked because it was early November; it would not have worked in December, January, or February when Cabo Polonio gets overrun with people on their summer break.  In fact, I recommend Cabo Polonio during the off-season.  In the peak season, Cabo Polonio loses peak form.  Tranquility and serenity give way to debauchery and mayhem….which, come to think of it, is not bad either.

Also, as we were cocktailing, a man approached us who spoke Spanish but in a Frenchy kind of way…because it turns out that he was French.  He sat down and conversed with us for a bit.  He decided, after visiting Cabo Polonio about 3 years back, to give up his thriving Internet business in France and move to Cabo Polonio to relax and pursue his other hobbies, one of which is photography.  He created a photo-book of Cabo Polonio that you may want to purchase if you visit.  He sells them directly or they can be purchased at the lighthouse.  The book captures the essence and fluidity of life in Cabo Polonio.

Could you give up your civilized life and move to a lazy beach community with no electricity?  Would you ever want to?  I asked the Frenchmen, in retrospect, “would you do it again?”

He said:  “It’s not for everybody…this type of life.  But for me, it’s perfect.  I was living a high-paced life and stressed all the time.  I didn’t realize just how unsatisfied I was until I came here.  Now I do what I love in a place that makes me feel good everyday.  Would I do it again?  Absolutely…only I would have done it much sooner.”

The hotel that we stayed in was fantastic.  There are only two hotels on the island (I think) and they are situated on the coast right next to each other.  Our hotel informed us that the electrical generator would be turned off at 9pm and that there were candles in the room that we should use when the lights go out.

Imagine:  A whole city with absolutely no lights at night.  We snuck out of our hotel at about 11pm in search of signs of life.  We stumbled upon a group of people in a room playing music and drinking.  We spent a few hours with them listening to live music and sharing spirits.  On our way back to the room, we paused to look at the sky filled with stars.  There is no star gazing quite like here…the city with no lights.  Truly amazing.

The next day we visited the light house, stood atop the hill where you can see both coasts of the peninsula, and met many people from all over the world.

I cannot say enough good things about Cabo Polonio-it may not only be one of my favorite places in Uruguay, but anywhere.

Do you remember the old Seinfeld episode, when George’s strategy to achieve inner-peace was to shout “Serenity Now!”

You’ll find it on a visit to Cabo Polonio.

Rich Gonzalez asked:

I have never been too fascinated with the tabloids.  Sure, like most people, the act of picking up one of these ‘yellow journalistic’ publications is much better then waiting for the person in front of you at the check-out line in the grocery store who has to make sure that they have all their coupons, is fun.  When such a moment occurs, vacation spots is what I would say is what’s most appealing to me.  I like to see where the next starlet is going to spend their vacation.

In one such instance, I remember reading about a place called Crested Butte.  Located in Gunnison County, Colorado, this little known spot has been a outdoor adventure haven for those who knew about it…and that wasn’t too many people.  The population of this place, according to the 2000 census, was only 1,529 people.

Chances are you may have never thought of this destination for winter/summer activities and vacations, that may have been because there was very little air service there. Now with its influx of air crafts flying into its local airport from such hubs as Atlanta, Denver, Salt Lake, Chicago and others, it won’t be long before you appreciate this small piece of outdoor paradise.

You may think that skiing and snowboarding are the only things that go on here; after all, it is labeled ‘the last great Colorado ski town’, but with spring having sprung, they are rolling out the preverbal red carpet…and catering to you.

Some of the things you can do in Crested Butte Other then Skiing!

Ok, its true that the main draw here is the amazing skiing and snowboarding that goes on - but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.  This is a list, albeit a small one, but it gives you a general idea of what other wonderful things await you here:

1.  Arts, Culture, Culinary and Well Being.  A number of walking tours make a great day of exploring the arts within the city limits.  Great for the whole family, some of the local facilities include Crested Butte Center for the Arts, Crested Butte Mountain Theatre & the Pioneer Museum and Train Museum where you can learn about how it all started back in 1880.

2.  Horseback Riding: The expansive National Park in Gunnison makes this activity an authentic experience.   From stables in Almont and Mt. Crested Butte, families and friends enjoy a variety of wilderness trail rides; and the feature ride is through Maroon Bells Wilderness from Crested Butte to Aspen.

3.  Whitewater Rafting - whether you’re a first timer or a veteran pro, you will quickly understand why whitewater enthusiasts have been coming for years to Colorado.  One of the largest tributaries to the Colorado River, the Gunnison River, has a network of steep creeks & Streams.   The Gunnison River is characterized as a scenic stretch; and also a number of fun rapids to navigate in.  Another winner for the whole family!

4.  Boating -Blue Mesa, the state’s largest body of water makes its home here; and some of the states biggest fish might explain why boating is big out here.  If your looking for another reason, then check out The Taylor Lake, Morrow Point and Crystal reservoirs which all offer boat tours.

5.  Scenic Drives - The key word here is ‘scenic’; because that’s what you get with these small country roads.  Like something out of a John Denver song, these roads lead deep into the Colorado wilderness and offer up some of the most remarkable views of nature that you will see anywhere.   Described by one park ranger, The West Elk Loop is the “closest you can come to a wilderness experience in a passenger car”.

As stated above, these are just a short list of things to do here.  And if you’re wondering where to stay while vacationing here…you don’t have to spend your next month’s paycheck as once was the deal here.  Amazing lodges start at under $60!  Vacationing like one of your favorite stars never was so relaxing and inexpensive!

Lyrene Zimmerman asked:

Horse riding has become exceptionally popular at Tswalu and the stables were very busy this festive season, with a wonderful giraffe sighting on the Christmas morning ride, followed by buffalo sightings a few days later.

Guests loved the thrill of being out on horseback, part of their natural surroundings.

The Tswalu stables now have15 horses varying of size, colour and breed. The breeds include Shire, Arab X, Appaloosa X, Saddler X, Boerperd, Friesian X, Quarter horse X and Pinto. We also have some retired racehorses from the Oppenheimer stud farm. Their sizes vary from 146cm (14.3H) to 172cm (17.1H).

Most of the horses are suitable for any type of rider but we do have a few that need more experienced riders. In December we welcomed Cindy to Tswalu, who will be assisting Almeri as Assistant Stable Manager. Cindy completed her Equine Science degree in South Africa and has worked with Arabian and Thoroughbred horses. She also worked at Saldannah Military Equestrian Centre where she was a Stable Manager and ran the eco-rides on the beach. She is looking forward to learning about the Kalahari and becoming a field guide.

This week we also welcome 2 new arrivals to the Tswalu stables. Levi and Lex are beautiful Shire carthorses, originally from England. In the past, this soaring breed was used to do farm work and pull carriages. Levi is 3 years old and already standing at 172cm (17.1H). Lex is 2 years old and is standing at 164cm (16.2H). They will continue to grow until about the age of five and will mature around 180cm (18H). Both horses are undergoing training and will be used for guests as soon as training is complete.

For a significant swath of vacationers, the old model of going to an established resort area, gobbling expensive meals and taking some hurried snapshots for a soon-forgotten album is long gone. Many travelers are now looking for—and finding—something different, something more authentic or participatory. For these travelers, vacationing can present educational immersion in a world unto its own, exciting physical challenges to overcome, or cultural explorations that open the mind to new ways of thinking.

The Los Cabos area is renowned both for the lively “party-town” aspect of Cabo San Lucas and for its laid-back, desert-meets-the-sea appeal. Any traveler can find its fabulous resorts and its luxury villas, and can spend the finest of times lounging around beautiful pools. But Los Cabos also has much to offer the new breed of travel pilgrim.

Los Cabos is a diverse region of intriguing eco-systems and unique terrain. Dubbed “the aquarium of the world” by Jacques Cousteau, the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez at Baja’s tip boasts an extraordinary profusion of marine life, both big and small. Cabo Pulmo, located on the East Cape, is a protected National Marine Park that boasts one of the largest and most diverse coral reefs in North America. There are also several biosphere reserves, where diverse ecosystems offer habitat to species of plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth.  These rugged desert canyons, arroyos and cactus-laden hills are fed by mountain streams and often open up to spectacular views of sparkling seas.

Discerning eco-tourists can choose from a wide array of Los Cabos offerings, from whale and bird-watching excursions to turtle hatchings, kayaking, mountain biking, snorkeling and scuba diving, dolphin encounters, mountain climbing and more. Earth, Sea & Sky Vacations is pleased to offer a variety of organized tours and excursions that take enthusiasts far from the common tourist package, and into the soul of the Baja experience.

Take, for instance, our tours offered through the Carisuva (which means “in touch with nature”) Foundation, an ecological project that seeks to preserve Baja California’s Ecological environment through education of visitors and local children. The Rhino Safari tour lets you drive Yamaha Rhinos (essentially small, low-horsepower jeeps) on rugged off-track paths and canyon trails to a spectacular Pacific vista, with stops along the way to discuss desert flora and fauna. Carisuva also has exhilarating Pacific Beach horseback rides.

For those wanting to be in the water rather than looking at it, you might consider Manta Scuba diving or a live-aboard dive trip on the Solmar V. These organizations will transport you to select spots such as Cabo Pulmo or on a nine-day trip to the Socorro Islands, where you’re likely to encounter dazzlingly colorful fish, giant manta rays, sharks, sea lions, turtles and spectacular underwater canyons. Extended multi-day trips include all meals, and can also include a variety of optional equipment. Those who might want a bit more luxury in their boating experiences should consider a week-long private yachting venture into the Sea of Cortez aboard a lavish vessel like the Panache.

Looking for something with a little more zip? What about whipping through the air on a zip line over an enchanting canyon, courtesy of Cabo Adventures? This exciting activity is conducted by experienced guides that are absolutely dedicated to the protection and preservation of this protected biosphere. The picturesque desert mountain canyon, deep stream-fed pools and waterfalls are sure to satisfy adventure seekers and eco-tourists alike.

For visitors who want to practice true “voluntourism,” you could consider participating in one of the local resort’s protected sea turtle programs. Resort guests can watch adult turtles laying their eggs, observe the hatched turtles in their holding corral, handle the baby turtles in a supervised setting and personally release them into the sparkling Sea of Cortez.

Some people might gravitate to far-flung lands like the exotic Galapagos or frozen Antarctica for their ventures; some people might even crave an unusual jungle outing like gorilla tracking in far-off Rwanda. But some will wisely choose Los Cabos, where they’ll find a bright world of intrigue and excitement, where a vacation doesn’t merely have to be a vacation, but can be a lifetime experience. Let one our Los Cabos vacation experts make your next vision a reality.

Positioned in the middle of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean, 62 miles northwest of Guadeloupe, Antigua and Barbuda are twin paradise islands which offer visitors over 365 beaches, bird sanctuaries, historical buildings and international shopping.

As the largest of the British Leeward Islands Antigua and Barbuda have warm, steady winds, a complex coastline of safe harbors, and a protective, nearly unbroken wall of coral reef. This destination paradise offers a range of pastimes, which includes sailing, yachting, snorkeling and scuba diving. Most people come to Antigua and Barbuda for the solitude of the pure white beaches while others know Antigua for its fantastic sailing facilities.

Other exciting activities include boating, cricket, tennis, windsurfing, hiking and bird watching, golfing, fishing and hunting, horseback riding and more - all of which makes Antigua and Barbuda the true Caribbean gem that it is.

Along with the sun and the sand comes an interesting history of the islands. A variety of museums there offer artifacts and insight into the island both before and after it was claimed by Europeans. When you get there, hop into a cab and get a tour of the island from one of the natives. Drive along the Fig Tree Drive to experience tropical foliage and banana plantations. Then swing by St. Thomas and peak in the shops that display local crafts and fruits.

Barbuda, which lies 32 miles from its sister island Antigua, is a smaller, less developed island. If you go, be sure to tour the bird sanctuary, home to over 150 tropical species.

Climate:

Antigua and Barbuda enjoys an average of eight and a half hours of sunlight every day. Temperatures generally range from the mid-seventies in the winter to the mid-eighties in the summer. Annual rainfall averages only 45 inches, making it the sunniest of the Eastern Caribbean Islands, and the northeast trade winds are nearly constant, flagging only in September. Low humidity year-round!

Dining and Cuisine:

From beach bars to bistros, Italian to Mexican, there’s a great range of restaurants around the island. There is also a variety of fast food places available. Antigua and Barbuda are renowned for their piquant hot sauces - eat with caution.

Indigo at the Beach is the restaurant at the stylish Carlisle Bay Hotel and one of the coolest places to eat on the island. Well-respected Harmony Hall has a great location and serves Italian food with a Caribbean twist.

Shopping:

Two charming shopping areas of Antigua are located in downtown St. John’s close to the waterfront at Heritage Quay and Radcliffe Quay.  As a duty free zone, Antigua offers a selection of local arts and crafts, straw goods, pottery and jewelry as well as china, crystals, watches, perfumes, cameras and tobacco.

Most shops are open Monday to Saturday from 8.00am - noon and then 1.00pm - 4.00pm.

On Friday and Saturday mornings the farmers market on the southern edge of the city has folk crafts, colorful tropical fruits and a buzzing atmosphere.

Nightlife and Entertainment:

Enjoy the sunset from Shirley Heights. Perched above English Harbour, this one-time military installation now attracts hundred of spectators, particularly on Sundays, when bands play and a big barbecue is fired up. It is also renowned for being a “lovers spot.”

English Harbour and St John’s have a decent selection of bars, or you could take a gamble at the Paradise Casino, which is the largest casino in the Eastern Caribbean. Once there, order a cocktail made with Antigua’s Cavalier rum at the hotel bar.

The island - like many others in the Caribbean - loves to party during Carnival (July to August), a 10-day festival of colorful costumes, talent shows, and good music.

 Weddings:

Like everywhere else in the Caribbean, one can certainly get married while on vacation in this island paradise.
